Dr. Umar Johnson & Ras Karbi
Billed To Headline 2014 Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza
Educational Psychologist and Garvey scholar Dr. Umar Johnson and cultural griot and Reggae vocalist Ras Karbi will both headline the 2014 Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza on Sunday, August 17, 2014.
Dr. Johnson, the controversial certified School Psychologist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia, is billed to be the guest speaker at the event which is scheduled to be held at the Lauderdale Lakes Educational & Cultural Center at 3580 W. Oakland Park Boulevard in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.
Dr. Johnson, who is a kinsman to the legendary Frederick Douglass and a former Minister of Education for Garvey’s UNIA, will also be signing copies of his information packed new book, “Psycho-Academic Holocaust: The Special Education & ADHD Wars Against Black Boys.” The well researched book promotes Dr. Johnson’s view that there is currently a “school to prison pipeline” structure in place in America that condemns minority students, especially African-American boys, to systematic mis-education and incarceration.
Also on the bill for the 2014 Rootz Extravaganza is the multi-talented musical artist, craftwork artisan and Broadway performer, Ras Karbi, who is on tap to make his first public performance in Florida with a special cabaret appearance in tribute to Marcus Garvey.
Although the former child prodigy has largely been out of the public eye for the past few years, the versatile Ras Karbi is a veteran Reggae vocalist/songwriter who penned and recorded the ever popular Jamaican hit song, “Discrimination” as well as “No Where Nuh Better Than Yard,” a track which came out on top of the island’s Festival Song competition in the early 1980’s.
The 2014 Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza is scheduled from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm at the Lauderdale Lakes Educational & Cultural Center and the event will commemorate the 127th anniversary of Marcus Garvey’s birth as well as the 100th anniversary of the UNIA-ACL which was formed in July 1914. The Centennial Exhibit and the Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza are all taking place under the patronage of the Jamaican Consul General in Miami, Franz N. Hall.
This year’s extended Marcus Garvey Rootz Extravaganza began on Friday, August 1st, 2014, with the official opening by Dr. Julius Garvey of the unique exhibition entitled “Marcus Garvey’s UNIA-ACL – The Centennial Exhibit”. The month-long, mixed-media exhibition focuses on the life, times and modern day legacy of Marcus Garvey and the UNIA-ACL., and will be on view to the public during August 2014 in the gallery of the African American Research Library & Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Centennial Exhibit is scheduled to run from Friday, August 1st, 2014 through to Friday, August 29th.
The Rootz Extravaganza is staged annually by the Rootz Foundation Inc. to observe and celebrate the birth of Marcus Garvey, the Jamaica-born Pan-African Patriarch and Hero. Entry to both events is free. For more information call 754-264-2205.
